Can Vegetarianism help fight the Global Food Crisis? or Is vegetarianism the answer to the global food crisis? That was the discussion point that run on the BBC-World have your say.Well i think that having the entire world feed on vegetables is completely unpractical and its such a radical proposal. This can not work because of the following reasons
culture of the people. Man has associated with eating meat since time immemorial. There fore this proposal of not eating meat is the same as interfering with the culture of the people. Culture is some thing man relates with and thinking that we can fight our own culture is completely unpractical.
In scientific circles it was always assumed that the first people ate meat, says paleontologist John de Vos from the Naturalis museum in Leiden, the Netherlands. But years later, sound scientific evidence for this claim was found. In fossil remains of the Australopithecus Africanus, the predecessor of man, researchers found carbon compounds that relate directly to meat consumption. This puts an end to all the stories that prehistoric man lived off fruits and vegetables.Eating meat is a natural condition of man. The first human tools were knives to scrape the meat off bones. ' There fore lets not lies to our selves that modern man can live on fruits and vegetables
There are places in the world where people cannot survive without eating meat, says Adel den Hartog, senior lecturer on feeding habits at the University of Wageningen. 'Think of the tundra. Nothing grows there. The same goes for the Sahara desert, or Greenland.' But it is striking that, necessity aside, literally all the peoples of the world like to eat meat, says Den Hartog. 'They don't all like to eat the same kind of animal, but the liking of meat is universal.' 'This does makes sense. Basic foods such as potatoes, rice, and grains have a flat taste. But meat has a strong, aromatic flavor. Meat adds a bit of relish to the table, it is popular, desirable.´With this i think we all can see that meat is an established human diet culture and its elimination will bring dire consequences
Baron Liebig, the inventor of the meat extract, claimed that muscular strength used in exertion could only be regenerated by eating meat. For this same reason therefore underfed Children in all parts of the continent especially Africa need meat.
Natural Selection. Man should be free to eat any food of his or her choice. We should there fore just find ways of Doubling food production instead of eliminating certain foods that are really essential to the Human diet. For this reason therefore i quote Den Hartog who said "We are on the eve of a great 'meat revolution´. The western world may become saturated, but the developing countries are starting to make up their arrears in the field of meat consumption."For this same reason also i regard under fed children in Africa need meat because they need it for health reasons and eliminating meat as part of their diet would be really unfair for them because to them "meat is not yet saturated in their diets"however let there not be mistakes because Eating a lot of meat is unhealthy.
Meat is of a large economic importance to the world. Therefore its elimination will also affect the economy drastically and send many people into hunger yet we can not solve hunger by hunger. I can however suggest that meat be eaten less often but not eliminate it.At this point we need sustainable solutions to control world hunger. Vegetarianism could help because allot of grains are fed on animals instead of people but the problem is it is not a sustainable solution because it will spark off other problems that will in turn need solutions too.
